Camping in Segovia
Segovia. Located on the southeast side of Castilla y Leon, has varied landscape of forested mountains and plains cut by gorges. Its three basic elements in the artistic and cultural aspects are the Roman aqueduct, the splendid cathedral and the Alcázar, which would rival that of Seville today had it not been damaged by a violent fire in the s. xix. The aqueduct is regarded as a masterpiece of Roman architecture, whose construction dates from the reign of the emperors Vespasian and Trajan.
The cathedral is known as "The Queen of Cathedrals." Apses facing the Plaza Mayor, forming a splendid warm golden patina. The Alcazar is located along the river Eresma. The original building dates from the s. xii, reforming up to Felipe II ordered construction of a new courtyard. A fire destroyed (1862) much of the building, restored after the civil war.
Finally, we recommend a visit to the house-museum of the poet Antonio Machado and the churches of S. Martin, Vera Cruz, S. Esteban and S. Millán.
Other points of interest: Pedraza will see a pretty popular architecture, highlighting the Plaza Mayor, the Romanesque church of S. Juan and the castle (fifteenth century). In the Real Sitio de la Granja de S. Ildefonso, Felipe V wanted to build a beautiful palace imitation of his grandfather, King Louis XIV of France.
Finally, it should be noted the town of Sepulveda, rural architecture which provides an air of exceptional beauty. Also, at the mouth of the river Duratón, is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña.
